Overview

Kylemore Abbey and the Victorian Walled Garden, located in the heart of Connemara, County Galway, represents one of Ireland’s top tourist attractions. Owned by The Kylemore Trust, this historical settlement is run by the Benedictine nuns who have been in residence since 1920. The Mission of the Kylemore Trust is the advancement of the Catholic faith through the provisions set out in its constitution.

The Kylemore Trust wish to appoint an Executive Director to lead the lay management, on behalf of the Benedictine Community, in the next phase of development. This exciting new position will be both challenging and satisfying for the right candidate, who will occupy a pivotal role with and between the Abbess, the Board and the Management team, in defining and overseeing the future direction of Kylemore as a living monastic settlement and leading tourist destination.

The Executive Director will act in the capacity of ‘Chef de Cabinet’ or ‘Chief of Staff’ in implementing the plans of the Community and the Board. The successful candidate will act for, and on behalf of, the Abbess as her agent in defining, communicating and implementing strategic plans and will act as a conduit between the Community and management team in pursuing the achievement of defined objectives.

Principal responsibilities will include but not be limited to: supporting the Community and Board of Trustees in the development of Strategic Plans, Policies and appropriate Governance Frameworks; providing leadership and direction to the lay management in implementing strategy, applying policies and developing appropriate governance processes; advising on financial and commercial matters as appropriate, and assisting on internal and external communications.

The Executive Director will report to the Abbess and the Board of Trustees and will act as Chair of the Management Committee in the absence of the Abbess and at other times as an ex officio member of that Committee.

It is expected that applicants will have significant experience at senior management level, in a relevant context, with responsibility for the leadership of staff and management of operational budgets of comparable complexity. A demonstrable ability to develop, communicate and implement strategic plans is also required. Core competencies required include; leadership, strategic vision, financial and commercial acumen, judgement, organisation, communication, relationship building and a results orientation.
